# What are the characteristics of Balluff's background blanking?

## Background blanking

With the help of background blanking, when detecting an object within the set sensing distance, it is not affected by the reflected background, and is almost not affected by the color and surface condition of the object (object reflection).

By cutting off the beam from the transmitter to the receiver, the background blanking can be realized. Therefore, the visible field of view is divided into two parts: effective region and background.

In addition, by dividing the receiver into at least two adjacent regions (e.g. with the aid of dual diodes or PSD elements) and using a geometric arrangement (triangular arrangement), the actual position of the object within the sensing range can be detected. In this way, the object can be distinguished from the background accurately.

The characteristic of diffuse reflection switch with background blanking lies in its gray level deviation and lag.
